2009-2010 School Year Starts Before Labor Day
For several years, the first day of school has come after Labor Day in Federal Way Public Schools.
However, the 2009-2010 school year will break from that pattern. The first day of classes will be on September 3, the Thursday before Labor Day weekend. Students will attend school on Friday, September 4, as well, before enjoying the three-day holiday weekend and returning to school on Tuesday, September 8.
This school year’s calendar was developed three years ago as contract negotiations with the Federal Way Education Association were being finalized.
This year, Labor Day falls later in September than it normally does. In settling on this school calendar start date, the committee considered the possibility that, in holding to a post-Labor Day start in 2009-2010, any extended school closures for weather or other emergencies could result in the school year extending into July to make up for missed days.
The district has started school before Labor Day in past years, generally due to a late Labor Day.
