College Bound Application Deadline Extended

The deadline to enroll for the state's new program, the College Bound Scholarship, has been extended to June 30. In addition, a one-time extension has been given to current 8th grade students. They will have until the end of their 9th grade year, June 30, 2009, to apply. Current 7th graders also have until the end of the 2008-09 school year.

The College Bound Scholarship is a financial aid program for students who are eligible to participate in the free and reduced-price program. The scholarship will help 7th and 8th grade students plan for college, pay for college, and begin to fulfill their dreams.

Eligible students sign a pledge in the 7th or 8th grade promising to graduate from high school, maintain a 2.0 grade point average, and be good citizens.  In exchange, the state of Washington will pay for their college tuition and books -- for up to four years or until the student earns a bachelor's degree.

As parents of middle school students know, college and careers are probably well down the list of what gets the attention of the average 13-year-old  - unless, there’s a person, program or incentive in place to help them focus on the future.  The College Bound Scholarship is designed to inspire students to begin making their college and career plans without worrying about the cost of attending college.
