1. The student uses listening and observation skills to gain understanding.
- 1.1 Uses attention level, listening strategies, and eye contact appropriate for particular circumstances and context.
- 1.2 Analyzes speakerŐs and listenerŐs purpose to select and use an appropriate listening strategy.
- 1.3 Listens and observes to gain information (e.g., summarizes speakerŐs main points, predicting possible questions).
- 1.4 Listens to identify emotional appeal vs. reasoned argument in oral communication.
- 1.5 Interprets verbal and nonverbal cues to adjust content, delivery, and language during presentation, group work, and one-to-one conversations.
- 1.6 Evaluates media for audience (e.g., How appropriate to the audience was the selected form?).
- 1.7 Evaluates media for stated and implied purpose (e.g., How well was the purpose met or achieved?).
- 1.8 Evaluates media content (e.g., How effective was the support? How effective was the content for the target audience and purpose?).
- 1.9 Evaluates media for technical strategies (e.g., How effective were the selected techniques for the target audience and purpose?).
- 1.10 Evaluates media persuasive techniques for effectiveness, credibility, and basis.
- 1.11 Compares the range of different interpretations the same media program can stimulate for different audiences.
- 1.12 Evaluates the explicit and implicit cultural and value messages contained in media.
- 1.13 Interprets the influence of media sources (e.g., accuracy, bias, point of view).
- 1.14 Generates probing questions and elaborate responses.
- 1.15 Analyzes, selects, and uses resources based on reliability of source and basis.
- 1.16 Checks for group understanding (e.g., observe, question, paraphrases, summarizes).
2. The student communicates ideas clearly and effectively.
- 2.1 Analyzes and selects those characteristics of audience, specific purpose, and context which will impact communication.
- 2.2 Makes sophisticated adjustments in content, delivery, and language based upon knowledge of target audience, purpose, and context.
- 2.3 Analyzes and evaluates the effectiveness of resources to develop topic and support.
- 2.4 Evaluates audience and purpose to develop appropriate content and delivery and selecting language and grammar.
- 2.5 Selects and uses more sophisticated media to enhance an oral presentation (e.g., overhead, multi-media software, panel displays, video).
- 2.6 Evaluates how the form and content choices created the desired effects.
3. The student uses communication strategies and skills to work effectively with others.
- 3.1 Evaluates group task and selects appropriate additional actions (e.g., assumes leadership, knows when to use dialogue or discussion).
- 3.2 Encourages group members to contribute ideas and points of view.
- 3.3 Elaborates on the contribution of other group members (e.g., identifies inconsistencies or bias, asks clarifying questions, connects ideas, evaluates ideas).
- 3.4 Designs appropriate techniques to help a group move toward consensus, propose solutions, or achieve results.
- 3.5 Analyzes group needs and selects appropriate problem solving techniques (e.g., identifies the target, defines issues, identifies obstacles, brainstorms, develops a plan, evaluates results, and accepts accountability)
4. The student analyzes and evaluates the effectiveness of formal and informal communication.
- 4.1 Practices, considers feedback, and makes decisions regarding adjustment of content and delivery.
- 4.2 Assesses own presentation skills; seeks, evaluates, and applies feedback from others.
- 4.3 Assesses own strengths and weaknesses in an interview situation and set goals for improvement.
- 4.4 Evaluates implications of the choices that were made in construction of media.
- 4.5 Identifies the media messages and understands that media is open to a wide variety of interpretations.
- 4.6 Evaluates the effects of commercialism on media.
