6th Grade Orchestra

1. The student acquires the knowledge and skills necessary to create, to perform, and to respond effectively to the arts. To meet this standard the student will:

1.1 Play music graded level 1

1.2 Play one octave Major scales in the keys of D, G

1.3 Reads, writes, and creates using whole through eighth notes and the corresponding rests

1.4 Identify melody and harmony in the music being played

1.5 Accurately play a passage of music with the following dynamic markings: piano and forte

1.6 Play two- and three-note legato slurs

1.7 Demonstrate an understanding of basic music terminology, notation, and other expressive elements

2. Demonstrate an understanding of appropriate bowings in level 1 music

2.1 The student applies the creative process with arts knowledge and skills to reason and solve problems. To meet this standard the student will:

2.2 Evaluate his/her own musical performance for rhythmic accuracy

2.3 Devise strategies to improve musical performances

2.4 Determine direction of pitch inaccuracy of open strings

2.5 Recognize musical structures that are lengthened and unified through repetition, contrast and variation

2.6 Evaluate the form structure of the literature being performed

3. The student uses at least one of the art forms to communicate ideas and feelings. To meet this standard the student will:

3.1 Demonstrate musical artistry to communicate ideas and emotions through musical performance

3.2 Compose a solo using some or all elements of tempo, rhythm, dynamics, articulations, and style using proper notation

3.3 Demonstrate musical knowledge through writing

4. The student understands how the arts connect to other subject areas, life and work. To meet this standard the student will:

4.1 Demonstrate stage presence, correct posture, etiquette and the ability to follow the director during performance

4.2 Discuss the appreciation of orchestral music and develop personal preferences

4.3 Recognize where orchestral music is found throughout society including media, advertising, entertainment, etc.

4.4 Demonstrate an understanding of the historical impact orchestral music has had on history and other musical genres

4.5 Demonstrate the ability to work as a member of a group
