Fifth Grade Learning Expectations
The learning expectations listed below are for fifth grade. Students will be assessed based on their progress toward meeting these grade-level expectations. Promotion will be based on the mastery of the reading expectations.
Communications Expectations
1. The student uses listening and observational skills to gain understanding.
- 1. Pays attention while others are talking.
- 2. Listens for main ideas, details, meaning, relationships and fact vs. opinion.
- 3. Asks questions to clarify content, meaning and to verify judgments and inferences.
- 4. Paraphrases conversations and information.
2. The student communicates ideas clearly and effectively.
- 1. Projects voice well.
- 2. Communicates with an expanding range of audiences.
- 3. Uses good posture and eye contact.
- 4. Uses a variety of media and resources to enhance a presentation.
- 5. Communicates for a range of purposes (e.g. to inform,explain, persuade).
3. The student uses communication strategies and skills to work effectively with others.
- 1. Uses language to interact with others (e.g. greets people, expresses feelings).
- 2. Contributes to group with suggestions, research, and effort.
- 3. Acknowledges others' ideas and points of view; identifies similarities and differences.
- 4. Assumes roles or tasks within a group without prompting.
4. The student analyzes and evaluates the effectiveness of formal and informal communication.
- 1. Establishes and apply criteria for evaluating one's own and others' presentations.
- 2. Offers feedback on others' presentations.
- 3. Accepts and applies feedback when appropriate.
- 4. Knows the qualities that make a presentation effective.
- 5. Identifies different communication techniques.
