Second Grade Learning Expectations

Essential Learning 1: The student writes clearly and effectively.

Writing Skill 1.6: Uses complete sentences.

Strategies:

  • Teach mini-lessons on complete sentences (noun and verb).
  • During shared reading, the teacher points out complete sentences.
  • Conduct peer conferences related to their work to help each other check for complete sentences.
  • Use D.O.L and/or a Morning Message (see Invitations by Reggie Routman) to reinforce complete sentences.
  • Conduct writing conferences with students to help them check for complete sentences.
  • The teacher gives the students sentences that are complete and incomplete. The student identifies the sentences that are not complete and corrects them.
